After went through 7 weeks of lessons , I've made up my mind to do Essay Question 1 about analysing advertisement. The question is
" Compare the advertisement of a local brand in different language editions and demonstrate how semiotics can reveal the differences and similarities between them."
Before start my Essay , i've done a throwing-out-word mind map that thing i know and can relate with advertisement. In the previous semester , i learnt a little about advertisement concept like SMP , understanding on slogan used and the message of an ads. Then, I did a little further research on other Ads's concept like A.I.D.A and etc. Although this essay question is more relate to semiotic analysing , but is important to know how the whole process of an ads like how it relate to the Target Audience and language used .

 

Besides semiotic , i found it can relate with other theory that i studied before like the transmission model process and intertextuality. This might help when comes to reveal the similarities of the ads.
Furthermore, in class , lecturer had introduce us Lacan and Roland Barthes ideology and i found there are other linguist like Michael Halliday , Roman Jakobson , Leech and Fairclough who discuss about the language of advertising and it function. In the essay , I need to choose ads from local brand and i considered , MAS airline , Dutch Lady , and F&N .  I will study more and understand on the theory first because i have not make a decision yet on which brand i will focus on. As for the language edition , i will choose between Chinese , Malay or English .
