1.Simple definition of Media , History and Culture

1.Latin(medius) = Middle
2.English language (16 century) = something in between
3.Relate to interface .
4. Medium connects things and makes things happen.
5. a device that is part of the communication process. (photography ,film,video games,etc) 6. Media Convergence
7. Shanmon & Waever (transmitter - Receiver)

“Information Source” == Message Sent => “Transmitter” == Signal Sent =>“Sources of Noise” == Signal Received ==> “Receiver” == Message Received ==> “Destination”.

8. Marshall McLuhan(1911-80) medium = an extension of the human mind/body

HISTORY

1. Indo-European(wid) = to know or to see. (leads to with and ,via Latin videre, to vision and video)
2. Greek = learned/wise man
3. Latin = knowledge obtained by enquiry.
4. English language (15th century) = knowledge & a written account of that knowledge.
5. Originally both FICTIONAL and FACTUAL accounts - no distinction made between the two.
6. Modern context - idea of history (a true account) separated from story (fictional)
7. HISTORY , not only telling the past , but ask why it happened , why it was important?.

1. Indo-European (quel or quol) - to turn around. (lead to cycle and wheel)
2. generally = being busy
3. Split into - Inhabiting a place and making a wild place suitable for crops
4. Latin ( colere , to tend , look after , inhabit , worship - so agriculture
5. Cultivare (latin) - cultivate .
